Oh My God. I abandoned my blog! T_T Since I've lost my camera, the quantity of me taking photos became almost ZERO. Only 2 post in a year?! What a shame! Hopefully I can grab another camera next year. Dear, Nikon D7000, would you be my partner >.<.

But anyway, I think I shouldn't let this blog update-less. So here I am, posting an old set photo. The theme was "My Self." These photos made in order to complete the 2nd selection of Indonesia Next Top Photographer (INTP) held by The Light Magazine in 2010. I think the competition is discontinued. But anyway, I got lots of new friend. Hehe... They are moooore talented than I am.

Mesjid Agung Jawa Tengah (The Central Java Great Mosque)

Actually, even though I didn’t add this place on my plan because of its location amid Semarang city, but luckily, this place is near enough to my friend’s house: Haiva, the place where I took the night on Semarang. So, here I am, share uh-so-not short story about he mosque.

This set is a part of Semarang-Karjaw Escape part I: Masjid Agung Jateng on Ardhphoto. So, keep visiting this blog to get the whole photo report ;)

The Central Java Great Mosque (MAJT) is claimed as the biggest mosque in Central Java. Built from 2001-2006, this mosque is able to accommodate 10.000 jamaah. Set up on 7.669 m2 of land for the main building and 7500 m2 wide yard, MAJT is constructed in the middle of the rice field on Gajah Raya Street, Sambirejo Village, Gayamsari district, Semarang.

There are some aesthetic values in Islamic acquaintance that applied in MAJT’s building structure regardless it is the unification of Java, Rome, and Arabic architectural style. Some of them are captured in my frames.

Started from the entrance from Gajah Street, there are 9 statues made from stones among the boulevard of the wide-loong-pond. It represents the number of Wali Songo : Muslim scholar who outspread Islam in the island of Java.

On the mosque yard, we are reminded by the Five Pillars of Islam: Syahadat, Shalat, Fasting, Zakat, Hajj.

Between the yard and the main building is the inscription stone of MAJT. From how it’s conceived on the garden, it looked like the stone objected in Jumrah threw (Stoning of the Devil). :|

MAJT Colosseum (right) and Multi-purpose room (left) scaled to people. The main buildings of MAJT were made symmetrical to each other with the inscription stone as the center point.

A set of pillar in front of the mosque is adapted from the Colloseum architecture in Rome. Consisting of 25 pillars, they reflect the number of Islamic Prophets.

The Eyeview

6 Hidrolic Umbrellas are placed between the main building and the 25 Pillars stand representing the Six Pillar of Islamic Faith. It remodels the same umbrellas assembled in Nabawi Mosque, Medinah. The umbrellas are only used on certain occasion like Eid or any other big events.

There are some supportive buildings around the mosque : canteen, convention hall, library, hotel, souvenir shops, view tower. Convention hall is commonly used for wedding celebration. Each fits up to 2000 people.

Ninety-nine-meters-high, The Asmaul Husna Tower resembles the number of Allah traits. This tower provides 5 km 360 degrees view around the mosque

From the top of the Al Husna tower , 19th floor (named Al husna because of its 99 m height, just like 99 God’s traits), you can see rice field all around the mosque and the whole Semarang city on the horizon. A good place to retrieve your emotion. I tell you, it is much better than Monas’ view! You need to pay IDR 3000 per person to get to the top of the tower by lift.

There are 2 floors used for Islamic Culture Museum. Most of them explain the use of MAJT and the history of Islam in Java (but not mentioning the Wali songo in detail, except their mosque). Here are some snapshots about the museum:

The Giant Al Qur'an, made manually by H. Hayatuddin, a calligrapher from Wonosobo, Central Java. This Al Qur'an is rarely used because of its size. Usually the people who visit the museum will be asked to read at least a paragraph of surah.

Ancient Mostoko (means head) for Mosque made from clay. This kind of mostoko were used to complete the rooftop of a mosque. Now, it replaced by modern Mosque copula, made from steel.

Unfortunately, I can’t get inside the mosque. -_-“ so, I cant say that the photo below will be representative enough to explain how it is inside.

Things about MAJT are that it’s big, noble, quite. Best time to visit is, whether in the morning, or near the sundown. If you’re about to take some pictures, they’d be be very good with its lighting system in the night. Unfortunately, there is no certain day when the light is on. They said this action is done because of the money thrift.

Even though I doubted you for the first time and put you as my second choice after D80, but I never felt that I’ve mistaken choosing you. You’re my sniper, you’re my eyes, and yes, you’re my boyfriend :’) *some people said so you know that, dear?

Hey Keeno, I gonna miss everything about you, especially if I am reviewing our photograph. We learned so much, didn’t we? And We did share lots of moments. Me, together with you, was on one package. I guessed I barely put you away if you were already on my hand. We did stick each other ;p Oh, you know what, thing that I regret the most? I can’t ever again do our ritual, ritual I believe made every shot from you great, kiss you and whisper: “gimme your best shot” :*

And you Touru, almost 6 month I handed over you and I felt no regret. You’re Keeno best match, you’re Keeno perfect couple. You perfectly completed him. You’re absolutely great, you’re sharpness absolutely perfect and I, together with you and Keeno have no fear if we have to put side by side with those biggie waggie camera coz I knew that we can capture great pictures. I gonna miss seeing things in precise through your eyes, Touru.

So, for whoever the person that stole you, I hope he will still take care of you. And for whoever who will hand over you later, I hope he/she can make great photograph, just like we were.

Medium visual, medium visualisasi, itulah fotografi bagi saya. Bukan sekedar pelepas rana menangkap cahya, tapi juga pelukis karya imaji otak.

Fotografi berbeda dari menggambar, melukis. Fotografi bukan sebuah lahan bagi jentik jentik berbakat dalam kuasan tangan, namun hasil dari latihan kerja keras dan team work.

Fotografi bisa menembus khayalan tanpa batas, tak terbatas seperti tangan menggoreskan garis dalam kanvas, tapi yg paling penting, fotografi adalah medium pelepas liar imajinasi manusia, yang tak terbatas pada ranah bakat, hanya terbatas pada usaha, kerja keras dan kerjasama.

So, the person that i told you above is the drummer :D This time he was on stage with Space Cadet. They was performed near my house in Tangerang (Geez, I still amazed about how they could play here?!) Well anyway, here are the photos. It was a (very) small stage with a very minimum light and also a very minimum gear. I was using my D40 kit only and let Adobe Lightroom did the rest.

Hanafubuki Koi Fubuki : Guguran Bunga Ruahan Asmara

Hana Fubuki, Koi Fubuki was a theatrical performance, performed by Japan Philology student of Maranatha Christian university on may 5, 2008. The real story was made by well known theater in japan named Takarazuka. Held in Theatrical Room of Center of Administration building, this event was attended about 300 people. This act was performed using Japanese dialogue with Indonesia narration.

The story itself is about a well-known Japanese thief named Ishikawa Goemon who lived in Sengoku Era (15th century). At that time, Japan is filled with politics intrigues, economy, and military while at the same time, the Ninja clan had its own predicate in the society.

Because of the poverty, little goemon (Bungo) was sold by his own mother to a ninja village--known as Iga Village. In Igo village, bungo later on became a though ninja. Also at that place too, he found his soul mate, Hatsune. When he grew up, he was undoubtfully wanting to be a ninja. Together with hatsuni and 4 mates, he escaped from the village and became a thief whose aim was to help the poor. Ever since, he started his story about a life of Ishikawa goemon: a legend about love, fellowship, betrayal, and sacrifice.

Note

I was using my Nikon D40 and analogue lens 50mm fix f 1.4. So many miss focused happened because of the different format between digital and analogue. -_-;; quite hard to synchronized it in a very very small depth of field. Fiuhh.

This was the main event of ITB Student Orchestra after Piano and guitar Resital: Rhythm for Souls on December 9, 2009 and Pre Concert Cinema of Symphony at Usmar Ismail Concert Hall, Jakarta on Januari, 23 2010 with M.S. as the guest star (Twilite Orchestra conductor and music director).
From now on, there will be no more Itb Student orchestra. The name itself would become ITB Symphony Orchestra :D.

Tune In The Light, A Campaign For Blind Worker

Have you ever heard about blind worker before? I’m almost sure that the first thought comin’out of your mind is a masseur; blind masseur are all around us. Well, that ain’t wrong anyway, but do you know any other skill they have?

Music.

Yeah, that's right. They have very good ears! Any other?

Hmm, hmm hmmm..

Most of you will say,

"Blind men frequently ask for our money ".

Oh come on! You can’t even call it a job. But, have you heard about blind men graduated from university

“Yeah, i heard some, what are they doing then?”

THIS will answer some of your questions. Blind men, (tuna netra, in bahasa) do have potentials! Especially in hearing ability. Also, for some people, they communicate well. I called it Verbal Potency. Beside as masseur, we only know the blinds as musicians, teachers, and beggars. In fact, they have some other competences alongside what I wrote before.

Wanna proof? Watch this!

Do you believe that they are able to use the computer well? Yes, they do! Ever see any? Nope? I have! Although this ability needs software that helps them a lot, I see another potential. If they can use the computer well (as if they can see), why don’t they have an equal chance like us? The main problem for the blinds is they usually aren’t accepted in formal field. Well, some of them become teacher. But like I told you before, it is only for their community. The fact that they are as smart as us is neglected because their inability to see. Let me tell you something: THEY CAN.

a Telephone operator or a tele-marketer

Well, not in every work field you can put them into, but there are some kinds of job which really really benefits from their gift. I only discover some, but there are so many chances that there will be others. Who know??My final assignment is still far away from success, being effective, and well done. But why don’t WE, together, create a real one, an effective one, to make this campaign successful? Why don’t we, together with them, share experiences and give a chance to proof?

Kutai Ancient Rock Art, Treasure in The Heart of Borneo

Expedition to the heart of Borneo.

Being one of the biggest islands in the world, Borneo (Kalimantan, in bahasa) is not only very rich in biodiversity compared to many other areas (MacKinnon et al. 1998) for its treasure. Borneo also discovered as one of the place that has the biggest amount of ancient rock-art in the world

This expedition was a part of my lecturer dissertation, Pindi Setiawan. The subject is about “Penelitian Gambar Cadas Kutai Prasejarah” (The Research of Ancient Kutai Rock Art). The research itself included the rock art reconstruction, identifying gender (okay, that was my job desc), cave mapping, and creating the 3d modeling and simulation. Well, If some of you have read National Geographic Indonesia few month ago (explaining about Karst), you will get familiar with my next explanation.

Before in Kalimantan, the research took place mostly in the Sulawesi Island. They'd begun our expedition a month before on the coast of the Makassar Strait in East Kalimantan in the Indonesian part of Borneo. Guess what? They found treasure in Kalimantan. It has the most rock-art than elsewhere in Indonesia. The age of this rock art is about 10.000 years.

“Deep within the Cliffside caves of eastern Borneo; 10,000-year-old paintings featuring the hands of the artists themselves may offer clues about ancient migrations.” Luc-Henry Fage

The Borneo Rock Art research actually have been started since 1995 by an archeological team consisted of Luc-Henri Fage; Jean-Michel Chazine, a French archaeologist and specialist in Oceanian prehistory; and Pindi Setiawan an Indonesian anthropologist. Together, year after year, they found dozens of caves with paintings throughout the region, some with unique designs hinting at a mysterious forgotten people. Those caves can be found in Marang mountains (also known as Gunung gergaji—Saw Mountains). During 1995-2002, the team has discovered at least 30 rock-art-caves which made by the ancient Nusantara people in the end of the ice age. The main characteristic of ancient Kutai rock art is on the picture. The rock art was using hematite* as the technique, whether using spread technique or brush technique.

And so, let's begun the journey...

The preparation behind Nek Tewet's house

Before started our journey, we slept in Nek Tewet House which located in Bengalon for a night. From Bengalon, the team divided into 2: The first was Mr. Pindi using three motor boats picking our need using water way together with Nek Tewet. Another team brought the tools and equipments by land road, using car. We met in Hambur Batu.

After stranded in Hambur batu for more than a day because of technical problem, we continued our journey to Marang.

These chickens was on their way to Mahau. This is the only main road that connect between cities in Borneo province.

There is no traditional market in Hambur Batu. This picture shows the selling activity in Hambur Batu besides Night market. The seller himself usually doesnt come from Kalimantan. In fact, most of them are Javanese.

Personal bathroom is sooo rare. They use river for all activies : for water supply, bath, laundry, dishes, etc. In Hambur Batu, every house has gen-set. Public electricity doesn't reach this area.

The Signal Tree

Mobile phone signal is extremely rare in this location for all operator but sometimes we still can get it in certain place, for example: this tree. Citizen of Hambur Batu believe that the can get some phone signal there even though not every time. Besides this tree, people are used to hang their phone on the wall. The signal doesn't come anytime, yet sometimes sms' still can reach their number.

Journey to Marang

After about 1,5 hours from Hambur batu, accrossed the Bengalon river, We arrived at the Muara Ma au area. We took a rest at that point.

Some problems happened during our time in Marang, mostly technical matter (especially about boat). Broken propeller was just an example.

Logging

Threatened by mining industry and deforestation, Borneo is in dangerous. Not only for the biodiversity itself, those threat also endanger the water supplies in Borneo. Karsts are a natural way to keep tons of water for Borneo land. Mining energy have exploited most place in Kalimantan: coal, diamond, cement, etc. Most fires in Borneo are set for land-clearing purposes. While the Indonesian government has historically blamed small-scale swidden agriculturalists for fires, WWF noted that satellite mapping has revealed that commercial development for large-scale land conversion — especially oil palm plantations — was the largest single cause of the 1997-98 fires.

Found by Nek Tewet**, Liang Tewet located in the middle of the Gergaji mountains.Gergaji Mountain has longitudinal direction for approximately 32 º -212 º. The peak of this mountain can reach 500m over the sea surface.Elevation differences between the cave mouth and the river is more than 100 meter.To reachLiang Tewet, we have to go through Jeleriver, a tributary of Bengalun River. We took the river way from Hambur Batu to Mahau.Before that, we had to get almost 11 hours on road (7 hours from Balikpapan to Bengalon, 2 Hours to Sangatta, and2 hours to Hambur batu). The river way took almost 3-4 hours to Marang Mountain (using boat) and about 15-30 minutes walk and climb. The duration of water way depends on the season. It much faster if the river is full with water (it was dry season when we were there). Jya….we tasted the first rain while there!

**Nek is nickname for Kutai eldest. By the way, the cave’s name deprived from the name of the person who discovered it. Mr Pindi also has his own cave :P

Inside the Liang Tewet

So here it is.

Honestly, I didn’t take many photos during my time inside the Liang Tewet. I’m too busy with my own duty took detail of the hand stamp, printed it, then traced it onto transparent plastic. But anyway, things which happened inside the cave was mapping the hand stamp overall. There was no such a interesting object except the ancient hand stamp it self –which are flat and placed on the plafond. So, I was focusing on the journey. Mas Sunu and om Toink are the person who took photograph of our activity the most. So, this photo courtesy also goes to them. *Btw, I think I’ve lost one gigabyte of picture from my SD card, zzzzz. Accidentally erased, probably :( *

Silent Jungle

The age of this jungle is about 10 years old. It was the victim of big fire forest during the year of 1997-1998. Mr Pindi called it "Hutan Sepi" - Silent Forest because we wont hear the voice of the real tropical jungle from there. It is all because the fire forest.

Water Can.

The water source (river) is so far down the cave. We use used can to gather water from the rain drops that absorbed by the soil above the cave. We used it for washing hands, washing dishes, and drinking -- if the water havent been delivered upwards the cave only.

There are few function of the ancient cave in Kalimantan: habitation, ritual summoning, etc Liang Tewet, probably a kind of cave which used for initiation - a ritual to celebrate someone of being mature.

Tewet consist of (approximately) 163 hand stamp. We can see the hand stamps on the cave plafond. This is not including the wash out stamp. Some of the picture couldn’t be revealed again because of weather (direct sunlight from the West side affect the contrast of the image a lot), time, water, and forest fire. Well, It was more than 10 years ago since the previous research team came to this cave before the real research in 2008. Besides hand stamps, there are also some paintings appear in tewet: gecko and deer.

"They [the cave painters] were artists because art consists in transmitting an emotion. The paintings were not put there just for decoration; it was a religious act,"

Held on December 26, 2009 at Prefere 72, Dago, Bandung, MOBU Awards attracted so many people to come. Honestly, I didn’t know about it before I came to this event. Things I knew was Endah N Rhesa would play there based on the information from my boss’ Twitter. And... I *accidentally* knew that my boss - Adhitia Sofyan - would also play on that gig. There were so much more: The Banery, Overload Romance (I’ve just known them at that time also), Gea Idol, Rini Idol, Audi, and 3 other stars which I don’t know (sorry pisan!)

Long time not updating this blog. Hope you all still endure my laziness. But anyway, the main problem of the empty length of my blog was because my hard disk capacity. Thank God I bought a new one, named Albatros, now I can edit my photograph again.

About this post, I was taking photograph on a mini concert, held on Usmar Ismail Concert Hall. The concert was initiated by ITB Student Orchestra (ISO). This event was a pre-event from Lustrum (5 year ceremony) of ITB Student orchestra which will be held at March 2010. This concert was the second part of the pre-event concert. The first one was held in Aula Barat ITB.

The Usmar Ismail concert is the first ISO concert that took place in a real and formidable concert hall and also, it is on Jakarta (not Bandung). Let say that it was a great accomplishment during the first 5-year after ISO was formed.

They were so awesome. And I would like to say lots of thanks to people who help me documented this event: Yudhi and Bayu, who gave me their reliance and this opportunity, Aftah, for lending me his incredible wide lens, Opik, for lending me his camera, Echa, for revising every single word I've written, and so many others. I hope the results are not disappointing.

About the result…. I didn’t edit those photos that much. I shoot in RAW mode, and I didn’t add more. Some post productions I did was by only adding vignette and contrast. Well, I don’t know, but I think it has been a good shot from the first so I don’t need to edit more. By the way, I converted all into JPG format using Adobe Lightroom 3.

For many reason,i don't like take fashion photography that much except there is a beautifully paradox and deep concept behind it. I don' t like expose the beauty only --_-- geez...

Thats why i often edit edit too much coz I dont really feel that it is good enough..

This photo was taking place in ITB. The event was held by fotografi.LFM. Actually I had no interest to came yet my friend (jonathan.end) asked me if i could help him as his assistant. Well, okay then. But in the end, with camera hanged on my neck, i still took some photo (even i don't like it anyway). Here they are :

The concept was Victorian. Jonathan.end leased the gown from some place in Cilaki, costed 125.000 IDR.

Tigapagi consists of 5 member, all are male (honestly, I dont know their names). After I checked their facebook, I knew who the member are. Hahaha...And suddenly a friend of mine told me that one of the personnel is her girlfriend's nephew-arale. At that time, only 3 of them who attended this show. Well, each of them played guitar with one main vocal (the middle one). Their performance was awesome too. Heehe..I love this acoustic night++

Nowadays, i rare visit the traditional market to get shopping. I usually go to the supermarket or department store. Well, the traditional market near my campus named "Pasar Balubur" is a temporary market for over than 5 years. I havent taken any pic of it (well, it seems I have to take some before it really displaced to the new location. But anyway, in Tangerang-my hometown, there was one times i went there and bring a SLR camera. Yep, SLR, not digital. It mught be the year of 2006/2007. I used ordinary fuji film iso 200 negative film and pushed 3 stops. Post pro in Pak rahmadi, here is the result (I only captured some frame there).

The Analog camera that I used the most is Nikon FM2 with 50mm fix f/1.4, Nikon F80, and Nikon F90 (Oh yeah, I love Nikon so much). Those photographs were taken during the year of 2006-2007. I scanned it from the 35mm film roll. Most of the photograph was my traveling documentation. Feel free to comment :D and thank you for your visit.

Last night I was attending a show named "On The Night Like This", held by Mocca management in Bumi Sangkuriang, Bandung. The show was absolutely awesome. There was Baby Eats Cracker, TigaPagi, Endah n Rhesa (Oh, both of you have so damn great tallent!), Mocca them self (as a special show) and 4 peniti.

It was Open House Unit (OHU) held by Keluarga Mahasiswa ITB (KM-ITB). OHU held every year in order to greet the newbie student that success enrolling ITB. Every unit show their capability here. LFM (Liga Filam Mahasiswa)--my unit, also do the same. We have specific theme each year. This year the theme was "Pop Culture" and here was my friend being a fake Lady Gaga (but it seems looked like Dewi Persik than Lady Gaga). Hahaha.
